Fashion’s newest It couple just debuted their first collection under a very famous — and familiar — label.
With Milan fashion week in full swing (albeit with very few shows happening IRL), all eyes were on Prada’s livestream presentation that took place Thursday at 8 a.m. EST on Prada’s website.
Ever since the iconic Italian brand announced last February that Raf Simons — an industry darling who has held positions at Jil Sander, Dior and Calvin Klein, all while designing his own eponymous brand — would be joining forces with Miuccia Prada for her label’s spring 2021 outing, the fashion industry was abuzz with excitement — and unprecedented anticipation.
Never in the history of fashion have two such beloved names with such illustrious careers joined forces to design a full-fledged runway collection. What would it look like? And how would it come to fruition given that we’re existing in a global pandemic?
As it turns out, seamlessly — at least when it came to showtime.
The 40-look collection was chock-full of ’90s references that catapulted Prada to household fame: black nylon (this time as tunics topped over pants), the iconic logo stamped somewhere on nearly every look (most frequently at the neck, although accessory hounds will go nuts for the logo earrings worn by several of the models), sleek, satin kitten heels and a noticeable amount of chic yet practical outerwear that models clutched clasped together at the front, cape-like (Simons has a thing for coats, too).
Signs of Simons’ minimalist aesthetic seeped through via an overall feel of quiet restraint: layered hole-punched sweaters tucked neatly into full midi-length skirts, envelope-shaped pockets placed front and center on a bubble skirt topping a pair of pants (a trend from the aughts that is most certainly poised to make a comeback after this show) and brightly hued, structured handbags finished with a light gloss.
Most exciting — and fitting for our times — was the series of printed hoodies styled with fluffy white skirts. They echoed what Miuccia described in a live Q&A session that aired post-show on the livestream as her own current vibe.
“I personally go from one uniform to another one,” she said. “Now it’s a white pleated skirt and a cotton sweater.”
Doesn’t that sound delightfully cozy, especially now that we’re mostly regulated to life at home?
Miuccia and Raf: the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
